Disco Shell 2024

PRESENTATION STRATEGIES
ASSIGNMENT 2, PART 2

It all started with a Roman snail shell!

Brief - It is the year 2024 and as you know a lot has changed over the past 10years - most excitingly, due to the introduction of new building materials. construction has become far more fluid and exciting; we've finally learned to step out of the box!

For this project I needed to find a magical space that I could shrink myself down to live in
(eg.  the interior of a teapot, a ball, a hole in the wall etc.)
I had to scale it up for human habitation using drawing and presentation techniques.

Work requirements:

Furnished floor Plan
Furnished cross-section
2-3 perspective drawings

I chose a Roman snail shell and turned into a Disco/Club
I love the complexity of the sculpture of this shell and I decided to challenge myself to draw the above requirements.
My inspiration came from knowing there are no discos anymore; yes there are pubs and clubs, but it would be fantastic to bring back the disco where people can meet to socialise, dance, de stress by having fun.
Floor plan

Cross -section

Hey Mr DJ, put a record on.......(Madonna Song)
Drinks by the poolside in one of the curved pods of the shell

Some of my quick sketches I drew once we were given the brief in class.
Then the images are colour rendered by hand using pastels, colouring pencils & rendering pens

The hand rendered floor plan is then taken to photoshop and more rendering is applied to add the finishing touches.  I just want to go there, don't you?

Cross section after photoshop rendering

"Hey Mr DJ put a record on.......I wanna dance with my baby"

I enjoyed this project so much and why not dream a little to create that magical space!
With the various materials and technology of today anything is possible and this could be achieved by 2014 without doubt.

Shoe Box Project!

Presentation Strategies
Year 1 - Semester 2

I was provided with a cardboard box, in which I used to model
to communicate a residential space,
which involved complex geometric/rounded shapes....
This is what I modelled, using paper, foam board,
foil, tuct tape cardboard rolls etc
I took a photo of the box with my iPad and printed it out.
I drew my model by using butter paper
(tracing paper) over the top of the photo print out, and using a pencil
to outline all the shapes
and added shading to give it depth and character
This is colour rendering, using soft chalks
to add colour of your choice to your drawing.
Best way to colour render is not to be heavy handed with the colours.
Photocopy a few drawings and have a go!
doesn't matter if you mess up as you
can practise on the photocopies as much as you want.
When you're happy take it to the photoshop programme to
enhance it even more!

This is my final presentation drawing
In photoshop you can add layers upon layers of
textures, colour and objects.  Never used it before,
but our tutor printed out basic handouts in which to follow and apply,
and I practised the process in class.
It was exciting and a little nerve racking at first, but once
you got the hang of it, it was a great tool!

I was assessed for my model making, drawing, hand and computer rendering
The final image was applied to a presentation board
and I wrote a poem of the process I went through to create this
presentation drawing (poem below)

Under-water Apartment Sensation

A shoe box!!! Sean happily handed out one each
"Design a room", he said "you have new tasks to reach"
Creating models with paper and glue
Where to start, i didn't have a clue!

Creating got started by designing a light
A few holes here and there, the idea was insight
Loo rolls for shades and perspex for stairs
Duct tape, foil and paper that tares

Share and remark on our models we did
Took a photo of our box, some included the lid
To the copier to develop a black and white pic'
Started drawing on trace paper, it just took a tick!

Enlarged it I did next, to A3 size
I made a few copies, i thought that was wise
Shaded here, there & a highlight to touch
It gave it depth and it improved it so much

The next step was rendering, some colour to add
Light touches at first, heavy hand would be bad
Blue, purple & orange are colours I used
Blended and smudged to create fab hues.

Introduction to Photoshop, here we go again
Another computer task to drive me insane!!

no, I was surprised by the things I achieved
My photoshop image is great, I didn't became grieved

Layer, edit, image and file
Going through these selections took me a while
So proud I am of my final creation
A submarine apartment, undersea sensation!

What a fun project! (and it was an assignment)

Achromatic scheme

"It don't matter if your Black or white"

Achromatic
Achromatic consists of only black & white, so no colour whatsoever!  Therefore we don't need a colour wheel for this scheme!  Rooms done in black & white are most likely to be found in modern contemporary interiors.
Sometimes, there are degrees of colour in the scheme; for example, warm tones of
wood in either the flooring or furniture, plants and flowers
and artwork.
Geometric patterns & designs in black and white
create rhythm through balance
which in this case creates a symmetrical, soothing
achromatic room.

'2 Became 1'

'2 BECAME 1'...!!!!

My inspiration......

Double Complementary Scheme - blue, blue green, orange, red orange.

Double complementary are made 'mostly'
by two hues next to each other on the colour wheel
and their complementary colour's opposite.
In my look I have made the blue green more dominant
just like the photograph.
The orange, red orange and blue are my contrast colours.
Together they are vibrant and lively, just like
the little fish amongst the coral who is
my inspiration for this blog entry.
In the photograph the soft fingers of blue green coral
 amongst the solid sea rocks
depicts harmony through texture, which I have combined into my look.
The little fish swims by unaware on how he blends
in and complements the underwater background.

The Look......

The kitchen, living room and hallway
 all link together by colour
to show harmony through progression within each area.
Note that the main colour is blue green,
but adding furniture & accessories in orange, red orange and blue
 to each area
brings a cohesive look to all three rooms.

The brick wall in the kitchen picks up the orange & blue tints and tactile texture
of the rock (next to the coral in the photograph).
The swaying finger like coral's texture is linked to the shaggy rug
in the lounge and the art work on the wall.
By adding tactile aspects like the heavy metal console, (which reminds me of
a boat wreck on the sea floor)
the drift wood mirror and the coral effect candle holder in the
hallway unifies the harmony through texture in all three spaces.

I chose this blue green and white patterned cushion
to compliment the orange armchair

As blue and orange are complementary colours
I added this cushion to the orange armchair.
It's velvet feel reminds me of the velvety look of the coral
you can by this here

With its retro charm this Mod armchair will fit
into any interior, the colour is bright, just like the fish!
you can get this here

The metal construction and rivets of this console reminds of
pieces of shipwrecks you would find at the bottom of the sea bed
in amongst the coral and rocks
you can buy this here

Beautiful candle holder which reminds me of coral
you can get this here

This gorgeous rustic wooden mirror leaning on the
console unifies all three pieces in the hallway, giving it a rustic nautical look
you can buy the mirror here

This figaro stool picks up the red orange pop of colour nicely
and is a contrast in front of the blue green panel on the kitchen island
you can get this here

A pop of orange on the Avantgarde tapware
for the kitchen

This clock is just so quirky and uncanny..... in that it
unifies all the colours in all the rooms
you can buy this clock here

Lovely blue drinking glasses

The blue green pendant glass
picks out the colour scheme well
and they are decorative
but not overpowering in statement
can be purchased here

Beautiful red orange pendant lamps,  would not look out of
place if 3 of these over hanged over the kitchen island.
They can be bought here

Add a luxe shag rug to any living room and it
oozes warmth and the urge to run your fingers
through it just like the coral in the photo

(although I am sure that is not encouraged)
you can buy the rug here

Enjoy creating this look......
